Flat Nappies

When the regular sized squares are used from birth then this can be one of the most economical systems as these nappies should fit the baby through to the average toilet training age / 35lb approx by changing the fold.

The regular cotton can be seen as quite bulky on a newborn baby so the newborn sized square may be preferred if bulk is an issue. The newborn size can be used if required later as a night time booster inside the regular square.

The bamboo square will sqidge down to be a slimmer fit but may still be seen as slightly bulky for a parent new to real nappies and nervous about a "proper bottom"!

Both fabrics are fine to be used with no tumble drier as they will air dry fast enough. The cotton will be like air dried towels ie slightly hard to the touch. Either give them a good rubbing when they come off the line or drier otherwise use the bamboo squares which will dry alot softer.

Both napies have good absorbency, the cotton regular may need extra night time boosting or day time boosting for a heavy wetting babe. This can be with either 2 squares folded together, a pad folded muslin square or with specific nappy boosters. The bamboo fibres are approximately 60% higher in absorbency to cotton so will usually be suitable on their own but additional boosting can be used in the above manner if and when needed.

These nappies will need some folding to fit around the baby and fastened with either nappy pins or the more popular Nappi Nippas. The folds are quite simple to do but will need a bit of learning first. This is why in my experience this isn't always a suitable system to be used by a childcare establishment or provider.

Use either a flushable paper liner inside this nappy or a stay dry washable fleece liner as these will make cleaning the nappies easier. A waterproof wrap will be needed to stop your baby's clothes or your lap getting wet! All of the wraps suitable for a shaped nappy will be fine for these nappies.
